A Night of Moths and Other Insects

Registration ends Thursday, 07/23/2026 11:59pm EDT

About This Event

Join us for an evening of moths and other fascinating nighttime insects at Lacawac Sanctuary, led by local naturalist, David Trently. Using ultraviolet lights set against white sheets, we’ll attract a wide variety of insects and get a close look at their incredible diversity, colors, and patterns. We’ll also apply special nectar recipes to nearby trees—an effective way to draw in species that don’t typically visit lights.

This program takes place during National Moth Week (July 18–26), a worldwide celebration of moths and nocturnal biodiversity. Participants are encouraged to photograph insects they observe and contribute their sightings to community science projects such as iNaturalist and Butterflies and Moths of North America (BAMONA).

Please park at the Visitor Center, where the lights will be set up nearby. You may wish to bring a portable chair for sitting between sightings, though many participants enjoy moving between the lights as new moths and insects arrive throughout the evening.

  • Location: Lacawac Sanctuary Visitor Center
  • $5/family, Free to Lacawac members

Rescheduling and Cancellation Policy:

  • Lacawac reserves the right to reschedule, postpone, or cancel a program due to low registration (fewer than 10 attendees), weather conditions, or other circumstances beyond our control. Participants will be notified as soon as possible if changes are necessary.
  • If Lacawac cancels a paid program, participants will receive a full refund of their registration fee. If Lacawac reschedules or postpones a paid program, tickets will automatically be honored for the new date. If a ticket holder cannot attend the rescheduled date, they may choose to donate their registration fee to support Lacawac’s nonprofit mission, or receive a credit toward a future Lacawac program.
  • As a nonprofit organization, Lacawac incurs credit card processing fees for both registrations and refunds, which reduces funds available for programs. Thank you for understanding and for supporting our mission.
  • No action is needed if you are able to attend on the new date. We encourage participants to check their email and Lacawac’s website and social media channels for updates, especially as weather conditions may impact programs.
